I didn’t want to hear from Vin again.

Not after seeing my father’s reaction to Luana and her Draavian warrior saying goodbye with a bit of dry-humping action. I can’t believe she did that so publicly — although she is a million times tougher and braver than I could ever be, and it’s not as if she should have to hold back affection from her mate now that we know the Alliance plans to throw us at our alien allies in the future…

But she doesn’t have her father around. As sad as that is, it does give her more freedom to follow her heart. She doesn’t need to seek or earn constant approval like I do.

Even if her father was here, I doubt he’d be anything like Commander Rivers.

Alliance rules are his life. He’s used them to explain to me why he had to miss every important milestone in my life that I’d wanted to celebrate with him. He wouldn’t even hand over his responsibilities to attend my graduation when I’d purposely chosen the military career I felt sure he’d respect. Nothing I’ve strived for has ever been enough to pull him from duty, and after seeing his reaction to Lu and Gav, it’s pretty clear that Daddy won’t ever approve of me having a relationship with Vin.

If he ever finds out about what I’ve done with an alien warrior… I’m pretty sure he’ll never speak to me again. He’d take it personally and think I’d been trying to intentionally destroy him and his career by doing something so “dishonorable.” I won’t ever recover the love he used to have for me if he knew the truth. I won’t ever win back his heart if I break it.

And what if that heartbreak destroys the promises I begged him to make? What if he’s so hurt by my betrayal that he gets himself killed in action — proving what an awful daughter I am?

I can’t. I just… can’t.

With shaking hands, I swipe at my infoband to ignore another call from Vin.

My father’s made it very clear that my whirlwind romance with a Fragen soldier was a terrible mistake, and I’m going to have to put the whole thing behind me. Just… write the whole thing off as a one-night-only thing. Just one more bad choice I’ve made.

I’ve been avoiding his calls and messages for days.

I’m trying to convince myself that Lt. Vin Farjeen can be forgotten, but it feels impossible.

Most days, the majority of my thoughts are divided into three main categories: thinking about what Vin and I did, wondering what Vin’s doing now, and imagining what a future with Vin might look like.

That’s usually when thoughts of the commander’s rage-face intrude on the happy fantasy, and I remind myself that our forbidden love won’t ever have a happy ending. Sooner or later, I’ll lose one or both of them — and after losing one parent already, I don’t think I could stand to lose another.

It’s best if I let go of Vin now… before I can get any more attached.
